The picture below is of Mirza Ali Qoli Khan, Iran’s first ambassador to the United States and his wife seen in front of the White House in Washington DC during the later Qajar era. Note that the ambassador’s wife is not attired in Arabo-Muslim grab. Iranian women were key players during Iran’s Constitutional Revolution in (1906-1911). The Constitutional Movement was the first of its kind in advocating human rights, equality and democracy in Western Asia. The aim of the Iranian Constitutionalists was to limit the absolute powers of the Qajar Shahs in favour of a democratically elected parliament.
